Books, the foods for thought...
While I was in Taiwan this time, I bought a couple of English books at a bookstore. People in Taiwan are highly concerend with teaching as well as learning of English, and this is well illustrated by a great number of English books displayed on the bookshelves in a bookstore. Besides those abundant English books, there are many young children who are quite fluent in English. In fact, while I was browsing at a bookstore, two brothers as young as 8 to 9 years old talked to one another in English with natural accent! It was really amazing! Not only that, they enjoyed browsing English books that looked a little difficlut for young children to comprehend! I simply wondered how on earth children as young as they were could achieve that level of English proficiency. What kind of English education have they received? Wondering if Japanese children are able to reach that level of English proficiency under the current English education carried out in Japan... What determines success or failure in learning foreign languages... Anyway, I'll continue to teach as well as learn English with unfailing interest in it!
